Gas retorts.-Relates to hydraulic lifting-apparatus, for opening and closing the doors of retorts in which a stem or standard a bears a piston c on which is mounted a cylinder f connected by arms k to the door of the retort. A plate b is provided in the standard a, thus dividing it into compartments d, e, which are respectively connected with the upper and lower sides of the piston c. By admitting pressure at one side only of the division, the cylinder is caused to ascend or descend, thus closing or opening the doors as required.
