Type.-A machine for cutting and trimming type slugs is provided with a slide 6 bearing an angularly adjustable top 26 and guides 30, 31, and with a saw 10 set at a slight inclination to the feed of the slide 6 so as to cut a concave surface on the slugs 36, thereby enabling them to fit close in spite of dust, as shown in an exaggerated form in Fig. 5. The saw has trimmers 11 projecting through its face and is mounted over a hollow pedestal 1 down which the cut-off ends fall. When the saw is required to cut grooves, the table 3 is raised by gear 23, 20, 19, 21, the hinged cover 38 closing over the cutter shaft 9 &c. until only the edge of the saw projects.
