9892. Zickwolff, E. May 6. Lighting and extinguishing gas.-In street and like by-pass burners in which the valves are controlled from a distance by varying the pressure of the gas in the mains, the forcible thrust of the valve against the seat of the main burner orifice to effect a tight closure, 'even though impurities be deposited on the valve or seat, is effected by a pivoted lever operated by a cam. The diaphragm, liquid-seal bell, or its equivalent, upon which the varying pressure of the gas acts,is connected by a rod a to a lever g, pivoted at i and carrying at its free end a dog k. The dog engages with a ratchetwheel m upon the same shaft n as a cam o, upon which bears the weighted longer arm of a pivoted lever p, the shorter arm of which actuates the valve s which, to extinguish the main burner, presses with a predetermined force against the mouth of the burner conduit t. The surfaces of the cam o may be of such a length that several actuations of the mechanism take place before the lever actuates the valve to close the conduit t, and the apparatus may be so distributed in a street-lighting system that the first increase of pressure lights all the lamps, the second extinguishes alternate lamps, and the third extinguishes the remainder. A pivoted lever w is provided for actuating the apparatus by hand.
