Abstract

9787. Pugh, J. V. May 5. Knurling. - In apparatus for knurling articles in such a manner that, when one is threaded on the other, relative rotat ion is prevented, the knurling - tool and the part to be knurled are so geared together that they have the same peripheral velocity. Figs. 1 and 2 show a means for detachably securing a wheel to its hub. Knurls c are formed on the wheel a and hub b. The knurls may be formed on the curved surfaces m. Fig. 3 shows a method of knurling the interior of a part e. The part e and a hardened steel guiding-piece f rotate together. The knurling-tools g are mounted on shafts carried by the longitudinally-movable carrier h and engage serrations in the piece f by which they are rotated. A supporting-wheel i for the tools may be provided. A similar device may be employed for knurling the exterior of an article. In another arrangement Fig. 7, the work x is geared to the knurling-tool g by chain or toothed gearing r, l, &c., the carrier being provided with an Oldham coupling 4 and the tool shaft with a double universal joint 3, to enable the tools to centre with the work. One of the knurling - tools is arranged to come into action slightly in advance of the others. One of the tools g, Fig. 10, may be provided with a screw 6 to adjust for wear. The knurls on the second part to be connected may be formed by any suitable means.
