Turning nuts and bolt heads. - An automatic lathe for facing nuts and bolt heads or similar work has two alined spindles a driven in opposite directions by chain or other pulleys c which can be put into or out of 'gear by clutches. Each spindle drives through reducing-gear a cam shaft g, the two being geared together. The tools are carried by slide-rests m, each carrying a facing and a chamfering tool, or one rest may carry the one tool and the other rest the other. To place a nut on a spindle, it is held by hand to the screwed end and automatically screwed on. To remove the nut, the driving-pulley c is put out of gear and the spindle put in gear with the other, which is rotating in the opposite direction. A plate having a hole to fit the nut is then brought into action by the lever k actuated by a cam, and the nut is thus unscrewed.
