Abstract

5499. Vernet, A. Feb. 7, 1907, [date applied for under Section 91 of Patents &c. Act, 1907]. Milling. - Machines are provided with several tools capable of assuming their operative position in succession, and located with their axes in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the tool-holder and tangential to a circle concentric with that axis. The driving-mechanism is arranged so that only the tool in the operative position is driven. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the turret spindle head 5 is mounted in a head 20 angularly adjustable on a vertically movable saddle 17, and the drive is transmitted to a helical wheel 31 eccentrically mounted to drive only the spindle in the operative position. The turret is rotated by a pinion 36, Fig. 5, on a shaft provided with wheels 34, 38 for power and hand operation respectively, and controlled by a clutch sleeve 41 operated by a lever connected to the locking-bolt. The bowls on the forked end of the lever have considerable play in the groove 51, so that, after the bolt has been retracted and the power indexing started, the bolt may bear against the face of the turret without disengaging the clutch. When the next hole comes into position, the bolt is shot and the clutch is moved into engagement with the hand-operated wheel. The bolt has a tapered end and the indexing may be completed by hand, the play in groove 51 permitting the bolt to be retracted for this purpose without disengaging the clutch. A similar turret head is shown applied to the cross - slide of a machine of the planer type.
