Abstract

8525. Newton, A. E. April 16. Lathes; lathe centres; lathe drivers.-Shafting is turned to a number of different diameters by an attachment which may be applied to exising lathes. A number of tools T, Fig. 2, are carried by rests on a common saddle so that as the saddle is traversed the tools come into action successively, and when the saddle contacts with a stop the shaft is finished, thus facilitating repetition work. The driver plate is keyed to the lathe spindle to enable it to be rotated backwards when using the attachment. The saddle consists of back and front guiding-limbs 34, 32, Fig. 7, connected at one end by a cross-limb 33, which may carry a slide-rest 35 so that the attachment can be used for ordinary turning. The limb 34 carries a number of sliderests 37 which can be clamped adjustably at 38. Each rest carries a tool-post 41, adjustable at 42 and formed with either two or three tool-slots 46, Fig. 10, closed by a cap 44 carrying an adjustable block 51, which is clamped at 52 and has an L-slot to receive a pivoted steady-rest 55, clamped in position by an eccentric 58 but arranged to be turned back to allow the rest to pass the tailstock. The roller-slides 62 are adapted to engage guides on either side of the support 55, and duplicate adjusting-screws 64 are provided. The caps 44 - form inclined tops to the tool grooves, and the tools are clamped by gibs 48 collared to screws 47 at 49. To allow tools to pass the tailstock even when set to turn a shaft of smaller diameter than the back-centre, the tailstock-mandrel 23, Fig. 3, is made of the same diameter as the centre, which is screwed into it and then locked from rotation by a screw and groove 28. The centre is clamped after adjustment at 25 by a split-bush 29. The centre and mandrel are grooved at 31, Fig. 5, and the rear face of the tailslock is cut away to expose this groove. The rear limit 34 of the saddle is overhung to clear the base 16, which is clamped on the bed by eccentric gear 22, 20 and carries the tailstock laterally adjustable at 18.
