Abstract

7892. Preston, E. J., and Mees, A. B. April 17, 1907. Window opening and closing apparatus; door opening and closing apparatus.-Relates to ships' and like water - tight sliding - windows, shutters, doors, &c., and to operating-means therefor which, by the continued motion of the operating-handle when the closed position is reached, presses the sash &c. against rubber packing on the frame. The sash is raised and lowered by rotating an operating- spindle 13, which is connected through bevel and worm gearing to pinions 4, 5 engaging with racks 61, which are connected together by a link 69 and to the sash by toggle-links 65, 66. When the sash approaches its closed position, the middle jointpins 67<x> of the toggle links engage with curved slots 68 in brackets fixed to the frame and fold the links. During the relative movement between the sash and the racks which thereby results, inclined surfaces 60 on the racks engage with inclined surfaces 63 on the sash stiles and press the sash against the packing. When the sash is lowered, the links straighten out and the sash is moved off the packing by the engagement of inclined surfaces 62 on the racks with inclined surfaces 64 on the sash stiles. In a modification, instead of providing the racks and sash stiles with inclined engaging surfaces, the sash is connected to the racks by short links such as the links 52 described in Specification No. 8950, A.D. 1907. The application of the invention to windows having two sashes, one sash counterbalancing the other, is also described. Specifications No. 25,490. A.D. 1898, and No. 8551, A.D. 1901, are also referred to.
