Abstract
5916. Hughes, D. March 17. Hinges are securely fixed to doors by turning back upon itself that portion of the fixing-plate lying between or on each side of the part of the plate that is bent round the pin of the hinge. The invention is designed more particularly for iron hinges used in swing doors, gates, &c. of gardens, outbuildings, &c., and is described as applied to the plate fixed to the swinging member, but is also applicable to the other plate. The parts of the fixing-plate 1 complementary to the part 3, Fig. II, which is bent round the hinge pin, are turned back as shown at 4 and forced into the wood 9 of the door. The edge of the bent portion may be square, in which case it is forced into incisions cut to receive it ; or it may be sharpened, pointed, or rounded.
