HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 28, 1921.
Application filed August 28, 1920. Serial No. 406,561.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that L-CHARLES Gr. MURPHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trafiord, in the county of WVestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hinges, and more particularly to a hinge adapted for use in connection with doors in dwelling houses.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a hinge of simple construction which may be readily produced and applied at small cost. A further object is to provide a hinge which will act to hold the door in open position. Further objects will appear from the detailed description.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front view, partly in section, of the hinge.
Fig. 2 is a detail plan view of the pivot member.
Fig. 3 is a detail side view of the pivot member.
Hinge leaf 1 is provided with a finger 9 of substantial L-shape the lower portion of which terminates in a cone shaped member 10 which fits into a corresponding recess 1O provided in the upper portion of a cone shaped pivot member 11 which fits into a cone shaped socket member 12 projecting from hinge leaf 2 adjacent to the lower end thereof. At its upper end leaf 2 is provided with an inwardly projecting lug 5 through which extends an aperture which registers with an aperture in a similar lug 6 projecting from leaf 1. A pin 7 is inserted through these lugs and serves to prevent movement of the hinge leaves away from each other.
In practice, the pitch of the socket and pivot members will be varied or adjusted to suit the weight of the particular door to which the hinge is applied thus insuring proper operation of the hinge. The pivot member supports the weight of the door to which the hinge leaves are attached and, due
to the relatively great surface of contact between the pivot member and the socket member, serves also to provide a friction lock for holding the door in adjustment about its hinge axis.
As will be understood, andas indicated herein, slight changes in details of construction and arrangement of parts of the invention may be resorted to without departing from the field and scope of the same, and I intend to include all such variations, as fall within the scope of the appended claims, in this application in which the preferred forms only of my invention are disclosed.
hat I claim is 1. In a hinge, two leaves provided with overlapping lugs having alined apertures, a.
