Abstract

5402. Harkness, C. March 10. Electric traction on the overhead-conductor system. Collectors for electricity are provided with two collecting-wheels 23, 46 mounted in a frame 11 suspended from the ends of the nearly semicircular harp 2. The harp loosely carries a spindle 5 having secured thereto a sleeve 6 carrying a vertical spindle 7 on which the frame 11 is movably mounted. Secured to the lower end of the spindle 7 is a cam-plate 9, which has V-shaped projections and depressions forming a seat for similarly-shaped parts on the frame and tends to keep the frame in line with the harp. Similar camsurfaces 41, 48 and 29, 31 are also provided for each collecting-wheel separately, to keep them in line with the frame. The frame is preferably made in two parts 14, 16 which are secured together by screws 15, shown in Fig. 4, which is a cross-sectional plan on the line y-y of Fig. 3. In the case of the leading-wheel, the cam-block 29 is loose, and teeth 27 formed on its lower part gear with a wheel 35 adapted also to gear with a wheel 37 fixed on the spindle 7. By these arrangements, the leading-wheel is made to follow the collector arm when passing freely across frogs and the like, but both wheels can independently follow the path of the conductor while running in contact with it.
