4243. Elphick, T. A. Feb. 25. [Patent of Addition to No. 22,321, A.D. 1905.] Ironing-machines.-Relates to ironing-machines of the type described in Specification No. 22,321, A.D. 1905, in which the articles are conveyed beneath the heated roller A by means of a flexible apron C passing over supporting-rollers B, B<1>, and consists in forming these rollers B, B' with flat portions or their equivalents b<2>, which, when they come in line immediately under the roller A, cause the contact between the articles and heated roller to cease. In addition, to ensure the stoppage of the apron when the flat portions are thus alined, a clutch N is automatically thrown out of engagement to disconnect the driving-gear of the rollers B, B<1>. The clutch N is operated by an arm S secured to a shaft Q carrying another arm R, which terminates in a roller r bearing upon a face cam P at the end of roller B'. The clutch N is under the influence of a spring tending to withdraw it, and is also connected to the usual foot-lever V by an arm s', links T, T', and a bellcrank lever t. To start the machine, the foot-lever is depressed to shift the belts, and near the end of its movement comes in contact with a stop t<1> on the link T' and so throws the clutch into engagement, in which position it is maintained by the action of cam P. After the articles have passed to and fro the necessary number of times, the foot is removed from the lever V, and owing to the continued rotation of roller B' a depression in the cam P allows the spring to withdraw the clutch and so stop the rollers B, B' with their flat surfaces in the required position. The clutch N may be arranged to control the rotation of the roller A as well as that of the supporting-rollers. Specifications Nos. 6211 and 12,078, A.D. 1907, are also referred to.
