Abstract

675. Low, A. M. Jan 11. Producers; gas retorts -Explosive gas or vapour for use in internal-combustion engines or turbines is generated by the destructive distillation of liquid or, preferably, solid fuels in tubes traversing the combustion chamber, or arranged outside it and heated by the exhaust gases, the open ends of the tubes being closed by a seal. Steam, air, or other gases may be added for the formation of an explosive mixture. In the engine shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the tubes 5, which pass through the combustion chamber, have their ends 6 closed by a water seal 7. To the opposite ends of the tubes, fuel, which is agitated by a mechanical device (not shown), is fed from a chamber 10 by worms driven by adjustable friction gearing 14, 15. From the tubes 5 the gaseous constituents escape through a series of passages 27 which open into a cooling and purifying chamber 28 communicating with the cylinder inlet valve through the pipe 30. To utilize fully the heat of the exhaust gases, they are passed through the chambers 8 before escaping to the atmosphere. Steam from the water jackets, or elsewhere, together with an air or gas current, may be sprayed on to the incandescent portion of the fuel through passages 23, 25; or they may be admitted after the combustible has left the generating-tubes. The supply of explosive mixture is regulated by cutting one or more generating-chambers out of action.
