Bedsteads couches.-A bedstead or couch has folding framework at the head and foot, which may be extended so as to raise and support a bed 4, Fig. 1, and provide additional accommodation on a bed 3 underneath. At each end of the bed are two posts 20, shown in a partly raised position in Fig. 4, each of which is provided at its lower extremity with a roller 21 moving in a grooved bar 8, and is raised by a pivoted lever 22, which is itself raised by a thrust-bar 24 having at one end a nut 19, moved laterally by a screw 15. The grooved bars are fixed at each end to brackets 7, which support fixed end posts 6, and are clamped to the side bars 2 of the bedstead. When in the vertical position, the parts fit into each other as shown in Fig. 8, so that a rigid support is obtained. The screw shaft 15 has two oppositely threaded sections, and is supported by the end posts, and also at the middle by a yoke 17 fixed to the grooved bars. The shaft is turned by a handle, and a sprocket-wheel 18 and chain connect the two shafts. The frame is strengthened by brace bars 10 and plates 11, 12, these plates serving to conceal the framework when in the closed position. A modified form is described in which each thrust-bar is replaced by a chain, moving over guide - rollers attached to the nut and to the end post.
