Be it known that I, SAMUEL LANns, citizen of the United States, residing at 288 South Fourth street, Brooklyn, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to beds, and lnore especially to folding bedsteads; and the object of the saine is to make a. bedstead with a. clothes box which is moved to opened and closed positions as the bed is opened and closed. This object is carried out by the construction set forth below and shown in the drawings, wherein"- Figure 1 is a plan view; and Fig. 2 an elevation.

While I do not wish to be limited to the materials of which the parts of this device are made, I prefer angle-iron where possible. with straps, rods or tubes for the braces and rungs; and the frames of the two sections or parts will each have its proper bottom as of wire spring or wire fabric, and over these springs cushions or mattresses will be placed as usual. These features, the casters at the lower ends of the legs, and other details of similar character need not be described.

The framework of this bedstead is composed of two sections, whereof the main section 1 has cross rails 2 and 3 and end rails 4 and 5 of angle-iron, and angle-iron legs G depend from its corners, preferably having casters 7 at their lower ends, are connected in pairs by longitudinal rungs 8 which may be straps and other rungs 9 of angle-iron, which latter rungs may be braced as at 10, and the end legs are connected by angleiron rungs 11, each carrying a roller 12 near its front end. The structure thus built up is strengthened by oblique braces or brackets 13 and 14 in the corners so that it shall have the proper rigidity. The second section is composed of two end bars 20 of angle-iron, connected at their front extremities by a rung 21 which may be a piece of pipe flattened at its ends as seen in Fig. 1, and the bars preferably have handles 22 opposite said rung; and two upright legs 23 pivoted at 24 to said end bars and extending above the same as shown. The peculiar connection between these two 'sections forms part of my invention. As it is in duplicate. I will describe the structure at one end of the bed only. The sections are pivotally connected by a plate 30 which rises from the end bar of the main section at its front end, a plate 31 which rises from the end bar of the second section and projects beyond its rear end so as to overlap the plate 30, and a pivot 32 between theseplates; and the upper end of the leg 23 is connected with the plate 30 by a link 33 pivoted at its rear end at 34 to plate 30 and at its front end at 35 to the leg. Each end bar of the main section carries a support 36. When now the operator grasps the front edge of the second section and raises it, it swings around the two pivots 32 until it rests on the support, and meanwhile the swinging of the links 33 around their pivots 34 which are farther to the rear than the pivots 32 causes them to fold the legs 23 into aliuenient with and against the end bars of the frame of the movable section just at the time that the latter drops onto the support 36. The width of this structure is thus reduced by half so that it becomes a couch. In connection with this structure I provide a clothes box 40 movably mounted in the framework of the main section with its ends traveling over the rollers 12 thereof and its rear corners having rollers 42 which themselves move on the horizontal leaves of the angle-iron rungs 11. IVithout further mechanism such boX could` be drawn out or pushed inward like an ordinary drawer, but I connect it with the links 33 so that when the bed is closed the box will be housed within the main section but when the bed is half way open the box will be drawn out sufficiently to expose at least its front end when the cover 41 (with which its front half is provided as indicated in Fig. 1) may be raised. In order to effect this movement I secure castings or brackets 43 to the ends of the boX and employ links 44 pivotally connected at their lower ends at 45 to said brackets, and their upper ends pivotally connected as at 46 to the swinging links 33. When now the bed is folded from the position shown in Fig. 2, the pivoted points 46 describe half a circle around the pivots 34, with the result that the links 44 cause the boX 40 to travel to the rear in a manner which Will be clear.

Vhat is claimed as new is:

In a folding bed, the combination with a 11min section, of angle-iron rungs connecting these legs in pairs at the ends of this section, a second section hingedly connecte-d with the front edge of the first section, and legs for the second section pivoted thereto near their upper ends and near its front edge; of a clothes box movably mounted on said rungs,

to said hinge sections, for the purp se set forth.
