Abstract

25,413. Sangster, C. T. B. Nov. 16. Brakes; driving-mechanism.-Relates to threespeed hub gears for cycles, of the kind described in Specification No. 29,341, A.D. 1906, wherein the different speeds are obtained from a single epicyclic train by varying the connexions between the sprocket or driving wheel and the non-slidable annular wheel and planet-pinion cage by means of cams upon the slidable sun-wheel which control a system of pawl-and-ratchet clutches. According to the present invention, the sun-wheel m, provided at its opposite ends with clutch teeth or jaws, is arranged between two separate axle clutches g, i, so that the gear changes are effected by engaging either the one or the other end of the wheel with the corresponding axle clutch or by placing the wheel in an intermediate position clear of both clutches. As shown in Fig. 1, these clutches, which also serve as hearing-cones, are recessed at their inner ends and provided with internal clutch teeth j, k with which the opposite ends of the sun-wheel directly engage. The clutch g is slidably but non-rotatably mounted upon the axle, so that adjustment of the cone f effects the adjustment of the bearings d, c, h and, with a slight axial movement of the hub, the bearing e. When the long slidable sun-wheel is moved by a screw controlmechanism, such as is described in Specification No. 29,216A, A.D. 1906, the clutch member i may be used as a bearing as at o for the internallywormed sleeve n<1> to which the control cable is connected. For applying a back-pedalling brake located in the drum or recess at the sprocket-wheel end of the hub, the pawl carrier b and the sprocketwheel sleeve a, rigidly connected together, may carry ratchet teeth to engage a pawl upon a brake arm or lever ; or the carrier and sleeve may have an indirect connexion in the form of a laterallyshiftable clutch-piece such as is described in Specification No. 25,414, A.D. 1907. In lieu of locking the sun-wheel by the engagement of the ends of its teeth with recessed clutch cones, the righthand end of the wheel may be gapped or formed with clutch-jaws to engage a set of lugs or projections upon the axle, the left-hand axle-clutch being as before.
