Abstract

108,479. Olsen, F. J. July 31, 1916, [Convention date]. Variable - speed gearing; back-pedalling brake and freewheel arrangements. - In a two-speed hub for bicycles in which speed changes are effected and a brake is operated by back-pedalling, a clutch-sleeve z screwing on an extension of a sun-wheel x couples the sun-wheel either to the fixed axle r or to the planet carrier g, but is out of action when the gearing drives solid at the high speed. The gearing comprises also the following parts; a chain-wheel e on a toothed annulus d engaging planet-pinions f on a carrier g, which has a threaded engagement u, v with a clutch ring t, lost motion amounting to about a quarter of a revolution being allowed between the threads u, v; an axially movable member rotating with the carrier and formed at one end with teeth 14 to engage teeth 11 on the sun-wheel x, and at the other end with alternate deep and shallow notches 3, 4; a ring 6 with ratchet teeth 5 on both sides to engage the notches 3, 4 and other teeth on the clutch ring t; and a clutch sleeve p which, when moved to the left and rotated, operates a lever n, applying a brake l to the inner surface of the hub i. In the position shown, the sun-wheel is held against rotation by the clutch z, and the planet carrier g, drawing the sleeve t into engagement with the hub i, drives the wheel at reduced speed, To change the speed, the chain-wheel c is turned backwards; this rotates the sun-wheel x and moves the clutch z to the right to engage a surface 12 on the carrier g, and at the same time the teeth 5 move the sleeve l to the right and slip into the shallow notches 4, so that the sleeve is locked to the teeth 11 on the sun-wheel, and the teeth on the left side of the ring 6 first move the sleeve t to the left and then slip into the next spaces. The gearing then drives at the higher speed. to change back to the lower speed, the same operations are performed, the teeth 5 slipping into the deeper notches 3 so that the sleeve 1 is moved to the left by a spring 9 to prevent engagement of the teeth 14, 11. On back-pedalling farther than is allowed by the lost motion between the threads u, v, the sleeves t, p move to the left and operate the brake. Light springs 15, 8 prevent undesired movements of the sleeves t. z.
