Abstract
22,462. Fleuss, H. A. Oct.] 11. Exhausting. - Relates to vacuum pumps of the Fleuss type, and consists in means for preventing the loss of efficiency due to the conveyance into the vacuum of the pump barrel of air, moisture, and impurities which cling to the piston-rod during its downward stroke. The piston-rod F is now maintained out of contact with the atmosphere, being arranged to move in and out of a casing I which is located above the stuffing-box G of the oil vessel C and is connected by a downwardly-directed pipe K at its lower end to the suction of another pump. The piston-rod is coupled to an extension piece H, which passes through an upper stuffing-box J, and the stuffing-box G presents a conical upper surface down which the oil &c. that clings to the pistonrod flows into the pipe K instead of being carried into the oil vessel and pump cylinder. Fig. 2 shows a pair of vacuum pumps operated from a rocking beam 0 and delivering alternately by way of pipes E to a union piece P connected by the pipe Q to the suction of a pump (not shown) working in series with the above pumps. The pipes K from the casings I also lead to the union piece, and waste lubricating-oil is collected in a chamber R. The vacuum pumps may themselves be arranged to operate in series by providing connexions as shown in dotted lines. The rocking beam operates the extension H of each piston-rod through the medium of a cross-head L, M, for which the casing I forms a guide, and connecting-rods N.
