Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR J OHN ADAM- soN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Elkland, in the county of Tioga and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pumps, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a pump which will operate continuously to raise and discharge water or other liquid.
Another object is to provide a pump comprising two cylinders, one of said cylinders being provided with a float, and a fioat rod connected to a tilting lever which causes the ball to change positions of reciprocating piston, thereby exhausting air or steam out of one cylinder, and admitting air or steam into the other cylinder to force the water out, and vice. versa.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a pump made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation and partial section of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the cylinders. Fig. 4 is a detail side elevation and partial section of the reciprocating piston, operated by the ball rolling from one position to another on the tilting lever operated by the float rod. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the piston tube and the sliding frame and tilting lever.
Referring to the drawings for a more specific description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates one of the pump cylinders, and 2 is the other pump cylinder. These cylinders are of substantially identical structure and consist each of an upper and lower dome 3 provided with lugs 4:, a central cylindrical portion 5 and bolts 6 passing through the lugs 4 and provided with nuts 7, by means of which the two domes are firmly united to the central portion 5, and thus forming a liquid-tight cylinder. The cylinder 1 is provided with a float 8 having guide fins 9 on the periphery thereof to insure a smooth action of said float, said fins bearing against the inner surface of the cylindrical portion 5. A rod or stem 10 connected to the float 8 extends up throu h a pipe 11 connected to the upper end 0' the dome 3. The rod 10 is provided with a stop 12.
A cylinder or tube 13 having an inlet pipe 14 secured thereto and communicating therewith is provided with a double piston 15 connected to a piston rod 16 and adapted to reciprocate in the cylinder or tube 13 by means of the ball, and steam or compressed air enters through the pipe 1 1. A pipe 17 communicates with the cylinder 13 and extends to the pipe 11 secured to the dome 3 of cylinder 1 and thus communicates through said pipe with the interior of cylinder 1. The pipe 18 also communicates with the cylinder 13 and at its lower end communicates with the cylinder 2.
On the piston rod 16 a sliding frame is connected, said sliding frame comprising a bar 19 through which the rods 20 pass and a cross bar 21 to which said rods 20 are secured by nuts 22. A cross bar 23 is provided with T-couplings 2 1 on the ends thereof, and standards 25 are secured to the T- couplings at their upper ends, their lower ends being secured to a stationary bar 26 by means of lock nuts 27. A tilting lever 28 provided with curved recesses 29 is pivoted upon the cross bar 23. A supporting rod 30 rises from the bar 26, and an anchor rod 31 secured to the bar 26 serves to support the inner end of the tilting lever 28. On the end of the lever 28 is a pair of fingers which embrace the rod 10 above the stop 12.
Connected to the cylinders 1 and 2 is an outlet pipe 32 and an inlet pipe 33, said pipes being provided with check valves 34: and 35.
The operation of my invention may be briefly described as follows: Both the cylinders 1 and 2 are filled by gravity. Suppose receptacle 1 is filled and float 8 has raised the stop 12 on the rod 10. The weighted ball 36 rolls toward the left in Fig. 1 against the bar 19 of the sliding frame. Steam or compressed air enters the cylinder 13 and passes into the cylinder 1, forcing out the water through the check valve 34. The cylinder 2 is filled and discharged alternately with the oylinder 1, as will be understood.
