Abstract

Switches; couplings. - In a combined switch and plug connexion in which the switch is closed by inserting the plug, the plug is provided with a push-rod adapted to operate an independent member for actuating the switch. The casing 1, preferably lined with asbestos, is fitted with an insulating-slab 3, on which the switch is mounted, the switch arms 4 being carried on the rock-shaft 5 mounted in bearings 6. The switch arms are adapted to make contact with the terminals 7, which are coupled to the leads 8 and to the contactpieces 9 by connexions 9<a>. The contact-pieces 9 pass through a core 10 of insulating-material and are adapted to receive the pins 12 on the plug 13. A sliding rod 14, passing through the core 10 and guide 15, is provided with a cross-bar 17, normally pressed against the extension 10<a> of the core 10 by a spring 16. When the plug is inserted, an insulated rod 18 thereon depresses the rod 14, thus causing the cross-bar 17 to engage the operating arms 19 mounted on the shaft 5 and close the switch. The plug is locked in its closed position by means of a sleeve 20, which revolves loosely on the plug and is fitted with bayonet slots 22 adapted to engage pins 23 on the socket 11. Sufficient play is provided between the cross-bar 17 and the arms 19 to ensure that the switch contact is not made until the plug pins are some considerable distance in the socket, and a quick break action on withdrawing the plug is secured by cutting recesses 24 in the arms 19. The leads 8 pass into the casing through packing-glands 25, to render the casing waterproof.
