Abstract
541,766. Snap-action switches; switch cases and contacts; conduits. O'BRIEN, J. F. 'June 10, 1940, No. 10101. Convention date, July 7, '1939. [Class 38 (v)] [Also in Group XXXVI] A switch unit adapted to be inserted in a wiring system comprising a number of similar conductor-containing units having co-operating male and female ends 16, 24, comprises a cap member 15 chambered at 18 to receive the switch mechanism and having a base portion 21, a base comprising parts 16a, 16b grooved to receive the conductors 12 and registered by means of projections 27 and holes, and a contact-carrying member 17 which is grooved at 52 to receive one conductor and formed with a slotted post 36, Fig. 8. The switch contact 37 fits in the slot and is secured to the post by a screw and lug 39, its end being soldered to a pin 42 fitting into the corresponding tubular conductor 12. A similar pin 42a interconnects the other conductor 12 and conductor 51. The switch contact 46 fits in a recess 45 in plate 17 and is connected to a tubular conductor 50, the contacts 46, 37 both projecting through base 21 into the switch chamber 18. The switch mechanism comprises the movable bridge contact 61 which is secured to a U-shaped member 60 pivoted on shaft 56 carrying the operating member 55 and an integral forked part 57. A spring link 58 passes through a hole in the link 60 and engages in the fork of part 57 to provide a snap action. The shaft 56 is mounted in bearings 56a in the housing and the cover 65 has lugs which engage the slots 67 and hold the shaft 56 removably in place. The mechanism can be removed and a connecting link substituted, Fig. 10 (not shown). The unit may be shortened by separating the cap from the base and removing equal parts from the ends remote from the female and male parts, respectively. The parts of the base are of rubber or plastic and cured or vulcanized together for immovably positioning conductors 12. The operating member has a concave part 69 of relatively larger area for contact by the finger of the operator, and a pair of projections 59, 59a on the base 21 co-operate with a lug 54a on the member 55 so that, in extreme positions, one end of the concave part 69 is flush with the cover 65.
