Abstract

14,222. Milne, S. June 20. Mounting and securing rollers on shafts.-The rolls through which the paper passes after leaving the couch rolls of a paper machine are made of granite &c., and are provided with shafts running through them or with trunnions formed out of the ends of the roll and covered with metal sleeves. The roll may be bored out, as shown in Fig. 1, to receive a shaft a held in position by cement c inserted between the roll and the shaft through longitudinal and transverse borings in the shaft, as shown, and held in position by flanges b. The roll may be bored to one diameter and recessed at each end to receive metal bushes d, Fig. 2, which may be cylindrical or conical as shown in dotted lines, and held in position by cement in grooves e. Caps f, Figs. 3 and 4, may be pinned, shrunk, fixed, or held by nuts over the turned-down ends of the roller, and provided with sleeves g, Fig. 3, or the roll may be held at each end by flanges h, Fig. 5. Figs. 6, 7, and 8 show solid rolls, the journals of which consist of stud-like ends surrounded by metal sleeves.
