thereby preventing waste of material, as well as breaks in the machine; I
In paper making it is a fair estimate and well within the limits of actual experience to say that ninety per cent. of all breaks on paper-making machines occur on the first roll of the main press by what is known to the trade as sticking on main press, meaning that the paper has broken down by sticking and breaking off on'the main press. Under such conditions it is not uncommon for a mill to lose from fifteen to twenty-five per cent. in waste per day on a machine that has what may be termed sticky stuff To overcome the foregoing objections is the object of this invention, which consists in providing what may be termed a main squeeze roll of smooth granite, a cushioning roll of softermaterial, or rubber, and a wool felt paper stock carrier, the carrier passing between the two rolls, the main squeeze roll of granite exerting pressure upon the stock, thereby expelling the moisture therefrom, and, owing to thenature of the surface of the main squeeze roll of granite it will materially prevent the stock from sticking to the roll. A further object of the invention is to provide means in a manner as hereinafter set forth for connecting the granite roll to its spindle and journals, said means oeing such as to allow ofthe removal of the spindle of the granite roll when it becomes damaged, without the necessity of throwing the spindle or shaft away.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a paper stock squeeze roll which shall be simple in construction, strong, durable, largely overcoming any liability of the stock to stick and readily set up.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 24, 1907. Serial No. 399,029.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of. parts hereinafter more specifically de scribed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, understood that changes, variations and modifications can beresorted to which come within thescope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts throughoutthe several views :-Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view showing the arrangement of the squeeze rolls in accordance with this invention, and also showing the woolen felt carrier provided with a layer of paper stock; Fig. 2 is an elevation partly in longitudinal section of the granite roll showing the manner in which the roll is connected to its spindle or shaft.
Referring to the drawings in detail, what may be termed the main squeeze roll is indicated by the reference character 4. The main squeeze roll has its periphery smooth and uninterrupted throughout and is constructed of granite having an axial bore 5 through which extends a hollow spindle or shaft 6. v The shaft is of much less diameter than the axial bore 5, forming thereby a space between the shaft and the wall of the bore which receives a self-hardening cement, preferably brimstone, as at 7 .for connecting the granite roll 1 to the spindle or shaft 5. The latter is of greater length than the length of the roll 4, projects from each end thereof and upon each projecting end 1s mounted a flanged journal bearing 8,. the flange 9thereof abutting against the ends of the roll and secured to the ends by the holdfast devices 10 which extend through the flange and engage in the roll. The shaft 6 projects from each-Of the journals 8 and has screw-threaded end portions, as 11, upon eachof which is mounted a clamping nut 12 which engages the journal 8. The nut 12 acts as a means to close one end of the space formed between the journal and the shaft 6. Openings 13 are provided in each of the journals 8 to allow of the self-hardening cement 7 to besupplied to the space formed between the shaft and the journals and between the shaft and the wall of the bore 5. Extending between the rolls 4 and 14 is a carrier 20 formed of woolen felt andupon the carrier is positioned the paper stock 21 which, through the medium. of -the carrier 20, is carried between the rolls 4 andl lso that the said stock 2-1 will be subjected to the action of the granite squeeze roll 4, thereby expelling the moisture or Water therefrom. During the passage of the stock between the two rolls and the expelling of the water or moisture from the stock, thestockwill not stick to the smooth-periphery of the granite roll, thereby overcoming the objection known to the trade as sticking on main press When it isdcsired to remove. the granite roll from its spindle, the spindle is heated in a known manner, say by way of example a hot rod' extending in the hollow spindle. This renders the cement plastic and the graniteroll can be moved from its spindle and-a new one substituted.
