manufacture, which instead of being employed on the wet portion of the machine, where the dandy roll has been usually located, and instead of being structurally like a dandy roll. is employed in conjunction with, and adjacent to, some one of the steam drums of the drler forward oi the ing one or more watermarking members projecting from the periphery thereof, ha\'-* ing an are shaped impression forming face, and both cylinders comprising circular and circumferentially continuous coacting portions or members which are of lt'rusto-conical form and adapted for maintaining the pair of cylinders in the proper degree of separation and so that when a pair of such frusto-conical parts or members are aXially adjusted relatively to another pair of the correspondingly shaped members, the degree of normal separation of the pair of cylinders may be varied, as is desirable in cases when at diifcrent times paper webs of different thicknesses are being run; or where the depth of the impression or watermarking in the paper is desired to be varied.

As considered most practicable, both sets of the frusto-conical parts are provided as separately formed collars having their edges so beveled that the edges of those which are in contact witheach other are in'reversed 1 10 convergence, although the convergence of the bevel edges of both thecollars-f'on each cylinder are in the same direction: The frusto-conical shaped collars may be secured in any manifest or practicable manner, as, for instance, by having hubs 5 through which binding screws u 'areapplied for engagement against the arbor, or journal extensions of the cylinder.
By loosening the binding screws it for a set of the cfrusto-conical shaped collars appurtenant to one of the cylinders and moving them both uniformly axially in the same direction, the degree of separation of the pair of cylinders may be variably effected to a nicety.
In this class of apparatus it is desirable to bodily endwise adjust the cylinder having the watermarking projections 7 Aso that the watermarking impressions may be posi tioned at the proper placesin the width of the sheet or relatively to the margins of the web so that in the subsequent slitting of the web and cutting into sheets the locations of the marks in the subdivisions of the paper may be as desired. And, therefore, the apparatus comprises means. for the. axial ad justmentof the watermarking cylinder, the same consisting of the screws 1) a horizontally threading through the yoke shaped brackets to outside of the frame uprights d, which have forcing engagements against the ends of the arbor or journals of the cylinder, so that by turning one of the screws outwardly and the other inwardly through its bracket, the cylinder may be easily and accurately positioned. This same cylinder adjusting means may be effective for caus- \i'ngthe transverse sliding of one set of the frusto-conical parts or members across the periphery of the other set, for acquiring the adjusted degree of separation of the cylinders which may be required to accord with any particular working conditions; and in view of the requirement or desirability that the apparatus shall have the capability of the bodily axial, adjustment of one of thecylinders for the purpose hereinabove set forth, it becomes necessary that at least one set of the frusto-conical sha ed parts shall be axially adjustable relative y to the cylinder of which they are an appurtenance.
I claim 1. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination with the drier drums of a paper machine, of a pair of cylinders located adjacent one of the drums, one thereof having journal bearings adapted nuance for movements away from the other eyiin- 'der, one cylinder being provided with a watermarking member projecting from the periphery thereofhaving an are shaped irnpression forming face, one of the cylinders having circular and circumferentially con tinuous' parts of rusto-conical form, and the other cylinder having, for coaction with such frusto-conical parts, circular members also of frusto conical form and axially ad justable, and means for imparting a con-- stant yielding pressure to the movable cylinder in a direction toward the companion cylinder.
2. The combination with the drier drums of a paper machine of. an adjacently located pair of cylinders, one thereof being mounted in fixed bearings and the other having mov able bearings therefor, one of the cylinders being provided with an are faced watermarking member projecting from the pe riphery thereof, one of the cylinders having circular and circumferentially continuous parts of frusto-conical form and the other cylinder having, for coaction with such frusto-conical parts, circular members also of frusto-conical form, means for imparting 'a'constant yielding pressure to the movable cylinder in a direction toward the companion cylinder, and means for imparting an endwise adjusting movement to one the cylinders.
