- J. H. BEALE.
PAPER OALENDERING ROLL.
No. 328,639. Patente Oct. 20, 1885.
irnn STATES JOSEPH H. BEALE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
PAPERCALENDERING ROLLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,639, dated October 20, 1885,
Application filed September 12, 1885. Serial No. 176,979. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JosErH H. BEALE, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Paper-Calendering Rolls, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide calendering rolls, whereby re enforced or thickened strips extending lengthwise of the paper-pulp sheet may be ealendered with the same pressure as the intervening portions of the main sheet, so as to solidify all portions of such re-enforced paper fabric uniformly throughout its entire width, or vary the same, as may be desired; and it consists in providing one or both of the rolls with peripheral circumferential grooves of any desired depth and width and conformation, as hereinafter more fully described, and set forth in the claims.
Figure 1 represents a front-side elevation of a pair of ealendering-rolls embodying my invention. 2 represents an end elevation of the same.
A represents the frame, consisting of the two vertical supports, the upper ends of which are provided with journal-bearings, the lower ones, B, being formed rigidly within the said supports A, and the upper ones, 0, being fitted within vertical slots or openings,as shown, and are adapted to be adjusted vertically therein by means of set-screws D, passing down through the upward end portion or cappieces secured upon the upper ends of the supports A, and having a bearing upon the top of the said upper journal-boxes or bearings, O, whereby they may be screwed down so as to bring the roll E, journaled therein, with the desired pressure upon the lower roll, F, when rotated by means of a belt and pulley, or any other desired manner,so as to press and calender a sheet or web of paper being manufactured and passing between the said rolls E and F, so as to solidify the same and give the surface a smooth finish or gloss, as desired, or as heretofore and now in use.
Now, in order that paper fabric formed from the pulp and having longitudinal strips run or formed from pulp integral therewith may be calendered throughout the width of the pulp-sheet or paper fabric having such re-enforced strips uniformly alike, or so as to produce the same pressure upon the thin paper or main body portion as upon the thickened or raised strips, I provide one or both of the said calendering-rolls E and F with a se ries of peripheral grooves, H, extending circuniferentially around the rolls of such width, depth, and formation as to correspond with the re-enforced paper fabricbeing ealendered.
It will be seen and understood that if the paper fabric being manufactured has formed thereon a series of thickened or raised strips upon only one side thereof, only one of the calendering-rolls, F, as shown in the drawings, may have the flat grooves H formed therein, so as to calender all portions of the paper alike as it is drawn through between them when they are rotated in any suitable manner.
.Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. Paper-calendering rolls having a series of circumferential grooves, substantially as described, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A paper-calendering roll provided with a circumferential groove or grooves, substantially as described, as and for the purposes set forth.
JOSEPH H. BEALE.
