Typewriters and like machines; platen presses.-Relates to printing- apparatus having a single type which is more particularly applicable to the preparation of matrix sheets for the reproduction of music. The device consists of a solenoid a having a core b which acts through a spring i on a rod c secured to the type-carrier d. The type e is held by a chuck f on the type-carrier d. The tension of the spring i can be adjusted by means of a but h secured to a rod g which may be turned by means of a bead p. The impression is effected by making and breaking the circuit of the solenoid a by means of a pedal or hand-operated device. The type is inked by rollers k carried by levers l which are rocked by the typecarrier d. A pedal s<1>, Fig. 2, depresses a lever t<2> which makes the circuit of the solenoid through two contact-pieces u, u<1>. An electro-magnet t in the circuit attracts the lever t<2> and prevents the breaking of the circuit when the pedal is released. The circuit is broken by an automatic interrupter z, comprising two blades hinged together and connected by a spring z'. As the core b descends, the interrupter leaves a terminal 1 and makes contact with a terminal 2. The current then paeses through an electro-magnet w, which attracts the lever w<2> carrying the contact-piece u<1> and breaks the circuit. When the pedal rises, a hook x restores the lever w<2> to its original position and a spring v raises the lever t<2>. In a modification, the connexions are so arranged that the type strikes repeatedly as long as the pedal is depressed.
