Abstract

1589. Hughes, G. Jan. 22. Recording signals.-An apparatus for recording signals sent between block telegraph and other sigualling-instruments on railways or other signals communicated electrically or by telegraph comprises electromagnetically-operated levers pressing a clockwork-driven paper strip upon type-wheels for printing the time of operation, the number of repetitions of the time. record indicating the character of the signal. Mechanism for starting and stopping the clock-work or other motor for driving the record-strip is also described. Two electro-magnets B, B<1>, Figs. 1 and 2, are provided for the outward signal and the reply, and their. pivoted armatures D, D<1> carry pads E, E', which press a paper strip G upon time type-wheels C driven by a clock F, carbon or inking ribbon M being provided. The strip G is wound from a drum H on to a drum H<1>, preferably by a driving- roller J driven by a clock-work, spring, or other motor and provided with a tension roller K. The paper strip is moved at each recording operation, the motor being provided with a braking-mechanism for this purpose comprising a pivoted lever S, Figs. 4 and 5, carrying a pin T which normally engages with a pin U on the governor spindle V to stop the motor. When either coil P or P<1> of an electro-magnet O is energized by the signalling current, the armature Q attached to the lever S is depressed and the pins T, U are disengaged, allowing the motor to start. A spring Y restores the lever S to its normal position, and this movement is retarded by a dash-pot W to allow sufficient movement of the paper strip before the motor is stopped. The number of repetitions of the same printed time indication indicates the number of successive operations of either magnet armature D, D<1>, Fig. 2, which corresponds, say, to the number of bell strokes in code signalling, so that the interpretation of the recorded times can be made.
