Abstract

10,062. Burnett, C. April 30. Straining liquids.- Washed fine coal or other wet material is fed from a hopper 15 into a cylinder 1. and forced by a piston 2 into a chamber 8 having a rectangular, oval, or other cross-section, perforated sides and bottom, and a perforated lid 10 pivoted at one end and weighted at the other, for instance by a heavy portion 12 and superposed detachable weights 13. The piston is reciprocated from the shaft 7 by means of toothed wheels 5, 6, a shaft 4, and a connecting-rod 3. The hopper may have a slide lid 28 operated by an eccentric on the shaft 4. The lid 10 has a channel 16 to convey the water to a tank below. The coal may be delivered to the hopper by a conveyer belt and removed from the apparatus by a conveyer belt and elevator. In a modification, the coal passes from a perforated chamber 8 to a perforated shoot of oval or flattened form having a lid 10. According to the Provisional Specification, the bottom of the chamber 8 may be provided with closely set V-section bars or a grid, and toggle or knuckle-joint devices may be used to operate the piston.
