Abstract

9869. Marga, U. April 29. Breech actions, sliding breech-block.-The recoil movement of the breech block of an automatic gun is checked by means of a piston 23, which is pressed against the breech-block 3 by the pressure of the powder gases passing from the barrel through;the passage 22 to the underside of the piston 23. The return of the breech-block to the closed position is effected by means of the spring 9 acting upon the cylinder 7 which is connected by screws 6 to the breech-block 3. The shock at the end of the recoil is taken by the plungers 27, 28 which are pushed forward by powder gases from the barrel entering behind the plungers through the passage 31. In a modification, the return springs are dispensed with, the powder gases entering through a non-return valve being utilized to drive the parts forward. A safety device for the striker, which may also be used for retaining the recoiled or retracted breechblock, is described. In a modified form of breechblock, the cartridge base rests against a piston which is driven into a recess in the front end of the breech-block against the action of a spring.
