Slow combustion stoves; air supply. -A stove consisting of a fuel magazine and an adjacent vertical flue or combustion chamber separated from it by an aircooled partition, is fitted with means for supplying air at the upper and lower ends of the magazine, and for conducting to the ash-pit the gases distilled in the magazine. The stove shown in Fig. 1 consists of a lower part containing the grates 8, 9 and the ash-pit 10, an intermediate part 32 containing the fire-bridge 30, and an upper part containing the magazine 4, the vertical flue or combustion chamber 18, and the air-cooled partition 19 ; the whole is surmounted by a flue with an observation passage 10, and is enclosed in a casing. At the sides of the ash-pit are passages 1, 11, Fig. 5, fitted with valves and caps. The passage 11 conveys air to the inlet 15, Fig. 1, above the grates 8, 9, and the passage 1 conveys air through the vertical passage 3 to the upper end of the fuel magazine 4. The air mixes with the gases distilled from the coal in the fuel chamber 4, and passes with them down the passage 7 to the ash-pit 10. The upper end of the passage 7 is fitted with a valve 38, which is closed when the fire is being lighted. The air passage in the partition 19 is divided by a central vertical partition, thus forming two chambers which the air enters at their lower ends, and leaves by apertures 28 in the walls of the space between the roof 27 of the fuel chamber and the lower end 26 of the eduction flue. A slotted or other partition 36 is fitted in the ash-pit. In a modification, the passages 3, 7 are connected by a passage, which extends over the fuel chamber, and is fitted with a valve which admits to the passage 7 the gases from the fuel chamber.
