Abstract

7363. Humphrey, A. H. Nov. 26, 1906, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Incandescent gas lamps; globes, reflectors, shades, and holders therefor.- The burners 12 are arranged in a row alongside the chimney 15, being threaded from below on the flared base flange 16 of the chimney. Gas is supplied by a tube 1 to a cock 2, thence up to a common supply trunk 3 which connects with the nipple blocks 6. The mixing-cham. bers 10, provided with screwed air-regulating sleeves 11, are screwed on the nipple blocks, and the ends of the burner tubes 12 fit in the mixing-chambers when threaded into position. A similar arrangement may be bad with a single burner. The chimney is supported by the gas-supply pipe as at 18, or by a rod 19 as at 20. The mantles 26 are placed in holes in a plate 21, which acts also as a reflector ; slotted flanges 23 hold the lugs 25 of the mantle rings 24 in position. The plate 21 is carried by a slidable and rotatable rod 27 ; a button 29 secures the device in position; a head 30 abuts against a guiding-collar 28 when the device is lowered, and limits the downward movement. This mantleholding device is somewhat similar to that described in Specification No. 7364, A.D. 1907. The lamp casing 36 has a slot for accommodating the cock 2, and rests on the chimney flange 16 or on a band 45 so that it can be raised for getting at the burners. The top plate 38 rests on a collar 39, leaving a free space between it and'the casing for the escape of the products of combustion. The globe may be held in a ring 40 ; the ring may be hinged at one side and secured by a thumb-screw 43 at the other ; or a shade or reflector 31 may be provided, and may be hinged at one side and secured by a spring catch 34 at the other, and the globe may then merely rest on the top edge of the reflector. The valve has ports 54, 55 for the main and the pilot burners, and is adapted to flash the pilot at the moment of lighting ; a small permanent pilot is maintained by a by-pass regulated by a screw. The pilot 47 is arranged within the flared base flange of the chimney, and is further enclosed by the plate 21 holding the mantles, so that it is well protected from draughts.
