Abstract

19,754. Steinicke, [nÚe Karwinsky], T. Sept. 13. Incandescent gas lamps; lamp shades; reflectors. -In an inverted incandescent gas lamp, the mantle is open to the atmosphere instead of being surrounded by a chimney or like device to cause an up-draught. The gas supply passes through an injector p to the burner tube a, into which air is drawn through adjustable apertures of a feeding- device j. The mantle r is suspended from a socket i by means of a ring q of magnesia provided with angular lugs s, and may be protected from dust by means of a mica disc h. A glass or porcelain shade e, which is attached to a gallery d by means of clamping-screws t, surrounds the mantle and may be coated on the inner surface to act as a reflector. A second shade k or plate of mica may be suspended by pins f from the gallery to prevent a dazzling effect immediately underneath the mantle, or to retain any falling pieces of incandescent matter. The gallery, which may be integral with the socket i, is carried by arms c which form a yoke and are secured to a sleeve b arranged to slide on the burner tube. If the sleeve be lowered to the position shown in dotted lines, the socket will be removed from the burner tube, and the mantle may be readily exchanged ; or the socket may be provided with lugs to slide on the pins f in order to facilitate an exchange of the mantle. If one of the lugs is open, the socket may be swung to one side. In a modification, the burner tube is formed of two sliding tubes, the outer tube being secured to the injectorp and airsupply device j. The gallery is secured to the fixed outer tube, and the inner tube carries a yoke to support the vertical pins f and the mantle socket. If the inner tube be fixed, the gallery, yoke, and the pins are carried by the outer tube, which may be fixed by a clamping screw and removed if desired.
