Abstract

5879. Pilkington, W. March 11. Drawing; flattening.-Relates to a modification of the apparatus described in Specification No. 22,520, A.D. 1905. The sheet i is drawn from a slot a<2> in a float a<1> by rollers c, d, j, j<3>, &c., which are pressed together by weighted bell-crank levers d<1>, k, &c. When the top of the drawn sheet is above the level of a bending-roller c<2>, the frame e, carrying the rollers j, j<3>, &c., is swung into an horizontal position, as shown by the dotted lines, and the drawn sheet is passed into a leer o fitted with the usual conveyer p. The peripheral speed of the rollers j &c. is a little greater than that of the bending-roller c<2>, and that of the roller c<2> a little greater than the speed of the drawing-rollers c, d. The sheet is thus kept in tension and creases are avoided. After leaving the roller c', the sheet passes over a flattening-table g, where it is smoothed by a block h, actuated by either of the mechanisms shown in Figs. 2 and 3. In the former, the block h is moved by continuously revolving slotted cranks i<1>; in the latter it is reciprocated by a rod r, connected to an oscillating link r<2>, and is lifted out of contact with the sheet i on the return stroke by a cam s.
