Abstract
9033. Rowart, E., and Francq, L. April 23, A.D. 1903, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Drawing; rolli n g; shaping. - Sheets of glass are made by running molten metal into a hopper A lined with h a porous material e saturated with water and having at its lower end a long narrow opening, through which the glass flows out and passes between two rollers a covered with porous material saturated with water and having their journals mounted in ball bearings b so that they can revolve freely. The distance between the rollers can be varied so as to regulate the thickness of the sheet of glass. Immediately beneath the opening between the rollers is a narrow trough r, connected by pieces k, p to hydraulic plungers n. The trough r is situated in a chamber i connected at h<1> to a vacuum pump and having, at each side, chambers o through which a refrigerating-liquid is circulated. The plungers n, descending at a regulated speed, carry with them the trough r, and the glass, pressed down by the atmospheric pressure, descends into the chamber i in the form of a thin sheet. A small portion of glass which remains in the hopper rapidly becomes solidified, and is seized by grippers l pivoted on a bar s connected to the plungers n and pressed upon by weighted levers m. The rollers a being moved apart from each other, the plungers n are then made to ascend so that the grippers pull the sheet out of the chamber i.
