Abstract

5432. Kotz, E. H. March 6. Wedges.-Machine vices and adjustable parallels or packing blocks, of the kind wherein the jaw or upper wedge is thrust up and down the inclined lower support or wedge-piece by a screw, have differential-screw means whereby the movable jaw or wedge can be given a quick movement without necessitating a screw having an inconveniently quick pitch, or, if desired, a slow movement. A body a has an inclined portion c with a dovetailed guideway d in which projections e on a jaw f slide. An adjustable strip g provides adjustment for wear. The jaw f is moved by a screw i which has a left-hand threaded portion k and a right-hand threaded portion l. The portion k engages a threaded bore h in the jaw f, while the portion l engages a nut m which is secured to the body a by means of a boss n and a set-screw o. The jaw f may be faced with a serrated hardened steel plate r. The jaw f clamps the work and also thrusts it down on to the bed of the machine. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the screw i has an external left-hand thread k and an internal right hand thread l, the former engaging the threaded bore h of the jaw f and the latter receiving a stationary screw m secured to the body a by a boss s, projection n, and set-screw o. The invention may be applied to adjustable parallels as shown in Fig. 4. When a very slow but powerful motiun is required, the threads k, l may be of the same hand but of slightly different pitch.
