Abstract

1960. Davidson, G. L. O. Jan. 25. Aerial machines without aerostats; rudders; propelling; steering.-The machine is raised by one or more rotary propellers a, Fig. 2, driven by shafts e,f and bevel-gear from motors g and mounted on the framework c so that the inclination of the propeller spindle can be varied. The hub a<4>, Fig. 4, of the propeller is mounted on a spindle b pivoted at b<1> to the frame c and carrying at its lower end a rack b<3> which is engaged, for altering the inclination of the spindle, by a pinion d' fixed on the end of a shaft d, Fig. 2, and turned by a hand-wheel d<2>. At the rear of the machine is a rudder or tail formed of three parts, the middle part h, Fig. 3, being pivoted at h<1> to the frame c, and the side parts k being hinged to the middle part. The front end of the part h, Fig. 6, carries guides h<2> for a sliding nut h<3> working on a vertical screw j, which can be driven in either direction from a fluidpressure, or electric motor j<2> which is set automatically in motion by the movement of a pendulum or sliding weight acting upon the throttle valve or switches. The parts k are provided with arms having racks k', Fig. 8, at their ends, which gear with a pinion l<1> so that, as the part h is turned upwards or downwards about its horizontal axis, the parts k also move upwards or downwards relatively to the centre piece h. The pinion l<1>, Fig. 6, may be turned to move one part k upwards, while the other part is moved downwards by a spindle n fixed to the framework c and connected to the shaft l of the pinion l<1>. The spindle n carries a wheel n<1> and is rotated by an endless chain o passing over a pulley p which is turned by a motor r, automatically set in motion by the movement of a pendulum. A vertical rudder is provided at the front of the machine for horizontal steering.
