Abstract

28,964. B³ltzingsl÷wen, B. von. Dec. 16. Aerial machines without aerostats; planes, arrangement and construction of; propelling; steering.-The flying-machine is supported by two sets of pivoted superposed planes and by a number of lifting screw propellers arranged at each side of the machine and having their blades adjustable to vary the lifting power. The sustaining- planes 50 consist of a tubular frame covered with fabric and pivoted at 50<1> to the upright members 46 of the frame of the machine. The superposed planes are connected by links 68. The two sets of planes are connected together by links 70, 71 and simultaneous adjustment of the planes is effected by moving the link 71 vertically by means of a rack-bar 74 controlled by the aviator. The machine is driven by a pair of screws 55 mounted laterally on a tubular framework and driven by chains from the motor 61. The machine is steered laterally by a front rudder 56. At each side of the lower frame of the machine are mounted two horizontally rotating propellers each comprising a series of overlapping pivoted blades 1, Fig. 4, mounted on spindles 2 extending between a rim 3 and a hub 4. The propeller is secured to a shaft 5, Fig. 6, mounted in bearings in the frame 7 of the machine and rotated through a clutch 21 and the bevel gear shown. The spindle 2 of each blade has secured to its inner end a pinion 27 gearing with a rack 28 engaged by a collar 29 movable vertically on the bearing 15 by the aviator to change the pitch of the blades. The blade is secured between clamping-frames 26.
