Abstract

1878. Dobson, W. Jan. 25. Lids ; handles; spouts ; making kettles and saucepans; seaming- and joining sheet metal. Part of sheet-metal hollow-ware, such as kettles, pots, saucepans, &c., are connected together by forming a raised part or neck on bne part; passing the neck through a hole formed in the centre of a depression in the other part, and then spreading the end of the neck over the part through which it has been passed. In applying the invention for securing a knob to a kettle &c. lid, the body a, Fig. 3, of the knob is formed from a blank, Fig. 4, and a cap a<2> is secured to the body of the knob as shown in Fig. 1. The neck b, which may be split or fanged, is passed through a hole formed in the lid c, Fig. 1, and the projecting part of the neck is then spun or bent over inside the lid. A recess c<2> is formed in the lid for the reception of the lower part of the knob. The knob may have an annular bead a', Fig. 12. Fig. 7 shows in plan the arrangement adopted for securing together the ends of a sheet-metal ring such as x, Fig. 1, and Fig. 9 shows the manner of securing metal handles and spouts to the bodies of kettles &c.
