SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 663,392, dated December 4, 1900.

To whom it nuty concern.-
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER ROSS PIPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sing Sing, county of \Vestchester, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seamless Metal Jars, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact. description, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a vessel embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 a similar view showing one method of attaching a cover to the vessel.
The object of the invention is to produce a can or jar having a flanged cover-holding mouth or .rim of exceptional strength and without seam or other device to weaken it or interrupt its continuity, so that hermeticallytight closure devices may be fitted or secured to it under comparatively heavy pressure without spreading or otherwise injuring the flanged mouth, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings by letters, a designates the body of the vessel, on which is formed the cover receiving and holding flange constituting the rim or mouth of the vessel, said flange consisting of a part b, bent out horizontally from the body of the vessel and forming an internal annular shoulder b around the upper edge of the body portion a, and a part If, formed of an upward continuation of the part b and having an inward-extending bead bformed around its upper edge, said bead being of less width than the part b, so that a sealing-disk, constituting part of the closure devices, may be inserted in the mouth of the vessel and allowed to rest upon the shoulder 5 The vessel is made of a single piece of sheet metal and is formed by being forced through a series of dies successively decreasing in size until the desired depth of vessel is secured, asis well known in the art of stamping and spinning sheet metal. After the desired depth is secured the shouldered flange is formed either by stamping or spinning, the rough upper edge of the vessel is trimmed 0E, and the bead then formed by turning in thetriminededgeinasuitablemanner. Thus forming the vessel imparts great strength to its flanged portion, since the process of drawing or stamping the metal increases its density at the upper edge of the vessel, just where the greatest strength is required.
The vessel may of course be used in connection with any suitable closure device; but it is especially designed for employment with devices of the sort shown in Fig. 2, in which a designates an elastic or compressible disk of suitable material fitting within the flanged mouth and bearing on shoulder b and held in place by means of a metal disk d and an annular metal cap-strip e engaging over the edge of the disk and bent under the external shoulder formed by the parts I) and b In attaching the closure devices the sealingdisk is subjected to great pressure, so that it will entirely fill the flanged portion, being pressed outward under the bead and against the wall and is held in this compressed condition by the disk d and the cap-strip e, the lower edge of which is bent under the external shoulder. It will be observed that with a closure device of this character both the body of the can and the flanged mouth must be capable of withstanding considerable pressure, the shoulder 12 especially receiving a great portion of the strain. This necessary strength is secured by making the vessel in the manner set forth;
It will be further observed that it is essential that there shall be an internal shoulder to take the pressure of the sealing-disk and an external shoulder to afford a means of engagement for the locking-cap and also that the bead shall turn inward, not only to leave the exterior of the flange free of obstruction, but also to afford a sealing-flange under which the outer edge of the sealingdisk is forced in the process of closing the vessel. The bead also strengthens the upper edge of the vessel and affords a bearing and stop for the locking-cap.
It will be obvious that with a closure device of the sort described it would be impracticable to employ a seamed vessel, not only because the seam would be liable to open under the heavy pressure employed, but also because it would be difficult to make a seamed can of the shape herein shown. A seam any place in the flange would be objecneath the head, a disk on top of the sealingdisk, and a locking device engaging said disk and the external shoulder formed by the outward-extending part and the upward extension, for the purpose set forth.
