Abstract

23,661. Magden, W. L., and Brush Electrical Engineering Co. Oct. 24. Permanent way.-Relates to self-propelled vehicles provided with two sets of wheels for rail and road respectively as described in Specification No. 7060, A.D. 1906, [Abridgment Class Locomotives &c.], and consists in improvements in the construction of the vehicle and in forming the track so as to facilitate the transference of the vehicle from road to rail and vice versa. The rail and road wheels being of different gauge, a track is provided for the road wheels alongside the rails, and the rail and road tracks are arranged to be inclined to each other so that when a vehicle is changing from road to rail it will arrive in a position in which the rail wheels can be lowered to their full extent, without coming into contact with the rails, until the vehicle has moved forward sufficiently, and similarly when changing from rail to road. In some cases, there is provided in the vicinity of the place in question a rail track having the normal inclination of the rails and alongside it a road-wheel track which is inclined first upwards so that the rail wheels can be lowered or raised while not subject to the weight of the vehicle, and is then inclined downwards so that, as the vehicle travels forwards, the so adjusted rail wheels will either pass upon the rails with the road wheels clear of the permanent way or be clear of the road while the road wheels are travelling thereon. Figs. 5 and 6 show this. In Fig. 5, the rail wheels 1 are shown lowered ready for engaging the rails 27 as the vehicle travels on its road wheels 1 in the direction of the arrow down the inclined portion 28<a> of the track 28 for the road wheel 1<a>, and in Fig. 6, the road wheels are shown raised so as to clear the road when the vehicle leaves the rails 27, in which case it will be supported by the road wheels.
