SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 699,270, dated May 6, 1902.

To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, O'rro WILHELMI, a citi zen of the German Empire, residing at Dusseldorf, in the Province of Rhineland and- Kingdom of Prussia, Germany, have invented a new and useful Rail'for Railroads, of which the following is-a specification... 1 V, N
This invention relates toanimproved-railroad-rail which-is constructed with a View of reducing the jolting of the cars at the railjoints.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partlyin section, of a pair of adjoining rails, showing my improvement; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a single rail on section-line A B, Fig. 1.
The rail for double tracks illustratedby the accompanying drawings serves to minimize the j olting caused by a carriage passing the juncture of two rails. When a carriage passes over a rail, the-latter is pressed down somewhat, while the next following rail is at rather a higher level as long as the weight of the carriage does not beartupon it. In order to prevent or at least to minimize the jolt caused by the wheel rising from one rail to the next following, a tongue 2 is formed at one end of each rail-head by cutting away an adequate portion of the web directly beneath the head, as shown at a in the drawings, the space left being of any convenient shape. The other end of the rail-web is left solid, as usual. In laying the rails the notched end of one rail is placed against the solid end of the adjoining rail, the line of travel being from the latter to the former. The tongue .2
is so arranged that on a carriage passing the juncture of two rails it allows itself to be pressed down like a spring to the level to which the adjoining rail has been depressed by the weight of the carriage, so that the jolt is almost entirely avoided, a slight rocking motion only being caused, which is, however, rendered scarcely perceptible by the support which the other wheels of the carriage afiord. The space (1 might also be filled up with some elastic substance. The tongue might also be supported by springs or the like. Rails having springy or elastic tongues formed in the manner herein described are only for use on double tracks when trains move in one direction.
Having fully described my invention, what Idesire to claim and secure by Letters Patent 1s- 1. Rail-joint for double railway-tracks, thereby characterized that a space a, is cut out under that end of each rail which is first traversed by the wheels of the carriages, the cutting out of the said space producing a somewhat elastic or springy tongue 2 which by yielding slightly when the wheels pass over the juncture of two rails, minimizes the jolt.
2. A railroad rail provided with a web notched at one end, and with a resilient head that forms a projecting tongue above the notch, substantially as specified.
