Abstract

22,047. Vickery, F. W. Oct. 5. Cutting-machines for paper.-In a machine for cutting paper from rolls, the paper is drawn from the side of the roll 1 remote from the machine, so that the natural curl of the paper is always on the underside. This allows the paper to be properly flattened, cut, and carried away, without blowing off the conveyer during transit. The paper 4 passes from the roll through measuring- rollers 5, then through adjustable slitting-rollers 6 which divide it into the desired widths. The paper next passes between guide-rollers 7, over a stationary knife 8, down an adjustable inclined board 9, and then between an adjustable friction roller 10 and a felt or canvas band 11. The paper is severed by a knife 13, carried by a drum 12 and adapted to co-operate with the fixed knife 8. Fingers or wipers 14 on the drum assist the paper down the inclined board, and ensure that the front edge enters between the roller 10 and the band. According to the Provisional Specification, the wipers may be replaced by air nozzles. The front edge of the paper is always under the roller 10 before being cut, and as the band runs faster than the paper, the sheet is pulled tight before being cut.
