Sttuffing-boxes.-Relates in particular to the packing described in Specification No. 16,174, A.D. 1893, and consists in providing the more rapidly wearing-ring of each pair with flanges engaging with the other ring. Fig. 3 shows the lower ring of a pair detached, and Fig. 2 shows two rings together. The lower ring consists of V-segments 2<b> and circular segments 2<a>, the latter being formed with axial flanges 4<a>, having tangential faces which engage similar faces on the segments 3<a> of the upper ring. Spaces 3<b> are left between the ends of the segments 3<a>. The flanges 4<a> may be annular, relative motion of the rings being prevented by pins. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 20, the gaps between the segments of the lower ring are filled by tangential pieces 2<d> instead of by V-pieces. The flanges 4<b> may have tangential faces, or may be annular as shown. - In some cases, the segments are formed hollow to receive antifriction metal. The rings are pressed on to the rod by circumferential, radial, or other springs, and are pressed axially in any suitable manner, e.g. by spiral springs contained in pockets 7, Fig. 25, in a solid ring 8: Fig. 25 shows a floating ring 6 acting as an abutment for radial springs. A ring 10 formed with a spherical face makes a joint with a ring 11 let into the gland. A detachable cylinder 15 forms the box.
