Stuffing-boxes for pumps, steam engines, steam bammers, &c. have two packing-rings arranged to break joint ; each ring consists of three approximately-triangular pieces, and three pieces in the form of segments of circles which fill the spaces between the triangular pieces. The triangular pieces B are preferably hollow to receive blocks b<2> of antifriction metal which bear on the rod D. The segmental pieces C bear on the sloping sides of the pieces B and are recessed to receive flat springs G or spiral springs. The pieces B may also be recessed to receive spiral springs. The two sets of packing are enclosed in a sleeve A, and may be contained in an extension of an ordinary stuffing-box such as a cover M of the form shown. The packing may be supplemented by a convex ring H forming a joint with the cover M, rings I, and bevelled rings J acted on by a spring K. According to the Provisional Specification, shallow recesses may be formed in the sleeve A to receive the ends of the spiral springs, and so prevent relative movement of the two sets of packing.
