Abstract

19,914. Morgan, B. H. Sept. 7. Variable-speed gearing; link-work.-In a motorpropelled vehicle, the controlling-mechanism for the change-speed gearing is operated by compressed air or gas, and interlocking-arrangements are provided between the controlling-mechanism and the clutch. The change-gear operating-shaft 2, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, is capable of a partial rotary movement, being connected up with the operating piston contained in the cylinder 1. The shaft 2 carries a spring lever 3 which bears against a stop-bar 9 of polygonal section mounted in bearings 7, the number of sides of the stop bar corresponding to the number of speed positions. Each side is formed with a recess adapted to be engaged by a roller 22 on the lever 3, the recesses being arranged in different longitudinal positions. The stop bar is rotated so as to set it to the required speed by a bevel pinion 11 engaging a sector 12 attached to a plate 13 mounted on the pin 14. An extension 18 of the plate 13 is connected to the operating- handle on the steering hand-wheel. When the face of the stop bar corresponding to a particular speed is turned towards the arm 3, the shaft 2 is actuated by the fluid pressure until the roller 22 on the arm comes opposite and engages with the recess in this face. The sector 12 is supported by a roller 17 carried by an extension of the bracket 15. The shaft 2 is connected by an arm 23 to the sliding rack 25, Fig. 5, which is locked in any one of several positions corresponding to the various speeds by a stop 30 connected to the clutch pedal lever 31. The gear cannot therefore be changed unless the clutch is disengaged. The controlling- handles may be arranged on the steering handwheel, as shown in Fig. 7. The handle 20 is connected to the stop bar and the pointer 34 to the change-gear mechanism, the pointer and the handle being coincident when the change of gear intended has been carried ont. The handle 33 controls the admission of fluid to the operating cylinder.
