Be it known that I, ELL s J. HANNUM, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Speed-Boxes. for
Metal-Working Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improve ments in speed boxes for metal working machines containing speed change gears and situated between the driving shaft and the power shaft so as to regulate the speed of the machine;
f The object of my invention is to improve the construction of speed change gearsof the above type so that they can be readily Oper ated to vary the speed of the machine and will be compact taking up very little space on the machine.
In the accompanying drawing:Figure 1, is a sectional plan view of my improved speed change gear; Fig. 2,is a section on the line 22, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, is a plan view showing'theoperating leversjFig. 4, is a sectionalview on the line 44, Fig. 3 and-Fig. 5, is a sectional view on the line 5-5, Fig. 3.
A is the casing of the speed box, B is the power shaft, 0 is the driving shaft and is the driven shaft.
The power shaft B is mounted in bearings a, a, .on the casing Aand on this shaft is a plied.
The driving shaft C is splined as illus trated, and on the shaft is a sleeve E having a small pinion e and a pinion e a trifle larger than the pinion e, and secured to an extended hub of the sleeve E is a gear wheel 0 having a groove 6 in its hubto which is applied the shifting block f of the lever F. The lever F is pivoted at f 2 to the plate A and the block in this instance is swiveled in an arm f of the lever which passes through a slot (1 in the top plate A, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3, and canbe locked in its adjusted position by tive shafts, while the hub K is held from the bolt f which may enter any one of the holes in the segment 9 on the plate A. This .bolt is moved by means .of a spring "latch f pivoted to the handle of the lever F, as illustrated in Fig. 5. I
The driven shaft D is splined throughout its length andon this shaft is a sleeve H having a pin'ion h at one end and a pinion h at the Opposite end larger than the pinion h and secured tothe hub. of this sleeve is a gear wheel 7L The sleeve is grooved at h and adapted to this groove is a block '1', swiveled in the arm 71 of a shiftingjlever I pivoted at t to the plate A. This lever carries a bolt '8 which enters openings in the segment g on the plate A and is operated by a spring latch i carried by the handle portion of thelever I. So that the lever can be locked in either of its three positions.
G is an intermediate shaft preferably fixed I in bearings a in the casin of the speed box. On this shaft is a hub F having a small pinion 7c and intermediate pinion k and a gear wheel is, the gear wheel bein secured to the extended portion of the hub as illustrated.
K? is a bushing forced intothe hub and of a different metal from the shaft G so that it will turn freely onsaid shaft.
The Wheels 72. and k in the present instance are secured to the hubs by screws tapped partly in the ends of the wheels, and partly in the hubs, as indicated in Fig. 1, but other means for fastening these wheels may be resorted to without departing from my invention. In fact in some instances the three wheels or pinions may be cast in one piece.

'Thus-it will be seen that by shifting the levers F and I the speed can be changed by it is esired to increase the speed the v will mesh with the pinion k and if it is wished to still further increase the speed the sleeve H can be shifted so that the pinion h will mesh with the pinion k, or the pinion h will mesh with the pinion F, and if it is wished to reduce the speed then the sleeve E can be shifted so as to throw the pinion e in mesh with the Wheel k Thus it will be seen that many changes can be made in the speed by simply shifting either of the lever's F and I, or both of them.-
1. The combination in a speed box, of a casing, a driven shaft mounted in the casing, a power shaft, a driving shaft arranged at right angles to the power shaft, a worm on the power shaft, a worm wheel on the driving shaft meshing with the saidworm, an intermediate shaft between the driving shaft and the driven shaft, a hub on said intermediate shaft, a sleeve arranged to-slide longitudinally on the driving shaft, a series of gears thereon, a series of ears on the intermediate hub and arrange to mesh with the gears on the sleeve of the driving shaft when the said sleeve is shifted to certain positions, a sleeve on the driven shaft having a series of gears also arranged to mesh with the gears on the hub whenshifted in certain positions, and means for shifting the two sleeves, substantially as described.
2. The combination in a speed box, of a casing, a driving and a driven shaft mounted in bearings in the casing, an intermediate shaft also mounted in bearings in the casing and situated between the driving and driven shafts, a hub on the intermediate shaft, a sleeve on the driving shaft' and a sleeve on the driven shaft, a series of gears on the hub and a series of gears on each sleeve, said gears differing in diameter, and two levers pivoted to the casing, each lever having an arm proj ecting through a slot in the casing and having blocks, the block of one lever enga ing the sleeve on the driving shaft and the block of the other lever engagm the sleeve on the driven shaft, and means or looking the levers in their adjusted positions, substantially as described. 1 g
