Handles.-Spades for military and other purposes have a telescopic handle consisting of two tubes a, b provided with means for locking them together in either of two positions and thus converting the spade into either a short-handled or a long-handled one. The handle piece j has a side ring k from which to suspend a cooking - pot by chains or other means. The tube a is fixed to the blade and has a slightly enlarged screw-threaded upper part a<1> which engages a slightly reduced internally screwthreaded lower part b<1> on the tube b. A sleeve f, which is a sliding fit upon the tube a, is screwed on to the lower part of the tube band limits the upward motion of the tube b by abutting against the lowest portion of the threads a. In this position it is locked by a spring catch d entering an opening e in the sleeve. To convert the handle into a short one, the catch d is depressed and the handles turned until the threads a<1>, b<1> are disengaged. The tube b is then slipped down over the tube a until the slots g in the sleeve f can engage pins h on the tube a. The bayonet-joint so formed is locked by a spring catch i engaging the opening e in the sleeve f. When the two handles are hollow, they may be utilized to hold the chains or wires of the cooking-apparatus. The handles may be of wood with sockets. Spiral springs may be used for the spring catches.
