Abstract

13,845. Newton, C. A., Newton, H., and Newton, R., [trading as Newton Bros.]. June 16. Magnetic separators.-In a magnetic separator, applicable especially for extracting iron from the raw materials used in the manufacture of earthenware, china, and the like, a series of electromagnets a have their cores 0 attached to or formed integrally with iron cheeks or plates e, or each core may be provided with separate plates. The plates on each side may be provided with soft-iron studs h, which intermesh with those of the opposite plates and extend nearly to the latter. The separator may be placed in a trough f through which the slip or other material to be treated is flowing, a handle g being provided so that the separator may be lifted out for cleaning or repairs. Should the supply of current to the magnets fall below a predetermined limit, a valve m, which is normally held clear of the trough by a magnet o wound in series with the other magnets, falls and prevents any untreated material from passing into the treated material, and also prevents the magnetic particles adhering to the plates and studs from being carried amongst the separated material. The apparatus may be placed vertically or in other positions, material such as powdered flint dust falling through it by gravity.
