ELECTROMAGNET.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 732,273, dated June 30, 1903. Application filed August 21, 1902. Serial No. 120,544. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES AUGUST BRUST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electromagnets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to electromagnets.
The object of the invention is to provide an electromagnet which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, comparatively inexpensive of production, and which is primarily designed for use in connection with machines employed in extracting oil from cotton-seed, and is intended to separate the steel and iron scraps from the cotton-seed as it is fed to the mill or machine.
lVith this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top planview of my improved electromagnet. Fig. 2 is a side elevation with the casing removed, and Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on line a a, Fig. 1, with the casing in place. 7
Referring to the drawings,1 denotes an elongated cl1annel-iron,wl1i ch forms the core of the magnet. Thismay be made of cast or Wrou ght metal.
2 denotes the insulated wire-winding, connected to the generator by the ends 3 and 4. of said wire-winding.
5 denotes an insulated block or strip of material, preferably of wood, which is placed within the channel-iron core, and 6 denotes steel pl ates or strips,which are secured to the upper edges of the channel-iron core and project over the block 5 and hold it in place- 8 denotes a wooden box or casing.
One or more of the electromagnets are placed under a seed-screen, over which the seed passes to the linters, and are connected with a onc-hundred-volt direct-current dy namo, so that as the seed pass along any particles of steel or iron carried thereby will be attracted by the magnetic plates and separated from the seed. The steel plates after being once magnetized will retain the magnetism, thus making the magnet a permanent one, so that it will be fairly effective even if the current be interrupted for short spaces of time by the stoppage of the dynamo. It is desirable, however, to maintain a constant current, as thereby the magnet is made strong enough to retain all the particles of iron and steel and prevent any particles from passing to the linters.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring an extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a casing open at top, of an electromagnet comprising a channeliron core disposed therein and carrying wirewindings, magnetic plates secured to the upper edges of the sides of the core and projecting laterally in each direction beyond the same,'the outwardly-projecting portions of the plates forming supporting-flanges which rest upon the top of the casing and support the magnet, and an insulated strip placed within the core and retained therein by the plates, and spacing the inwardly-projecting portions of the plates, substantially as de scribed.
