MAGNETIC SEPARATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,816, dated November 23,1880.
Application filed December 2, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GoTTLoB SOI-IAEFFER, of Go'ppingen, Wiirtemberg, Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Separating Iron from Grain and other Substances; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
My improvement consists in the special arrangement of magnets in a downwardly-inclined feeding-surface, each magnet consisting of apositive and negative pole, which project in parallel separate rows through and above or on a plane with and across the feeding-surface, and with coincident spaces between said poles in line with the moving grain, while each separate magnet is united by an under tie-bar, so as in the aggregate to form one magnet, whereby the full force of both poles of each magnet is obtained, and their disposition in one or more double cross-rows gives the advantage of a uniform attraction across the path of the grain, so that metallic substances passing will be attracted and held, while the grain will pass freely down the incline. The poles pass through mortises in the feeding-surface, which holds them in proper relation to each other, while the magnets are supported in relation to the feeding-surface by an under metal tie-bar, which serves also as a means of uniting the inner ends of the magnets and merging the power of each, so as to constitute a single magnet with a series of separated positive and negative poles, and thus obtain a magnet of great power and a perfect separation of the iron from the grain.
Metallic substances, such as nails and pieces of wire, find their way in the grain in the operation of thrashing and in cutting the bands of the sheaves, and unless removed the rolls or millstone-surfaces would be damaged.
On the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of one form of appa *atus employed for carrying out the invention; Fig. 2, a section on line A B in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a section on line C D in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 an. inside view of part of Fig. l.
Extending across between the two end cheeks or brackets, to a, of a cast-iron frame. are arranged in pairs parallel rows of steel magnets b b c 0, one row of which, I) I), is composed of south poles and the other row, 0 c, of north poles. The lower ends of these down which the corn or grain is caused slowly to pass, and in so doing passes over the pro.- jecting ends or poles of the magnets b b c c, which seize upon or attract the pieces of iron contained in the grain, and which can then be readily removed by stopping the supply of the corn or grain or the magnets b b c 0 may be arranged to hang over the sloping board or plank f, or in any other manner that may be found most advantageous.
1 am aware that prior to my invention a magnetized surface has been combined with an inclined feeding surface or hopper for separating iron from grain and other substances in the operation of grinding, and thata series of powerful magnets have been arranged in a hopper or trough for the same purpose, and I therefore do not claim such combination broadly.
1 claim as my invention- 1. In apparatus for separating iron from grain and other substances, the combination of a downwardly-inclined feeding way or surface with a series of separate magnets, b 0, arranged in parallel separate rows across said feedingsurface, with coincident spaces between their poles in line with the moving grain, said sepaarate magnets being connected to form a single magnet, substantially as set forth.
2. In apparatus for separating iron from grain and other substances, the separate magnets c, secured at their poles in mortises in the inclined feeding-surface, and supported in relation to said surface and to each other by the metallic tie-bar d, whereby to form a single magnet having a series of separate and separating collecting poles projecting above or flush with said feedingsurface, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of April, 1878.
GOTTLOB SCHAEFFER.
